No prior tax experience is required. The program is built for aspiring tax professionals and new preparers — anyone ready to turn tax knowledge into a real career or business. Each week builds on the last, taking you from the basics to running your own tax office.
Students who cannot attend a live session receive access to the class recording, so you never fall behind. You can review every Thursday evening session on your own time.
No — you do not need a PTIN to enroll. Week one covers PTIN, EFIN, and business registration requirements so you understand the process. You are responsible for securing or maintaining your own PTIN and completing any additional federal or state requirements that apply to paid tax preparers.
You will get hands-on tax software demonstrations and a full software orientation. Week six covers setting up a client inside the software, entering income and deductions, reading diagnostics, reviewing returns, e-filing, and handling reject codes — skills that transfer across professional tax preparation platforms.
Yes. The training is fully hybrid — attend in person at our Durham, NC location or join live on Zoom. Recordings of every session are also available, so you can choose the format that works for you.
You will earn a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to join the Tax School Dropout professional network. Week eight focuses on building and growing your tax business — branding, marketing, attracting clients, and offering year-round services — so you leave ready to start preparing returns.
